Happy New Year to My Dearest Sister
Every New Year I remember Vietnam
When you were more of a mother
When you’d bathe me when I was a kid
When you’d wash my clothes till I was called “mister”
Those were hard times, yet fond memories
Money was rare, yet you managed to dress me
New clothes that were neatly pressed
And showed me love like love should be
In America, more is of the same
Wonderful as you are, you’re never tamed
From giving all of your heart to those in need
Lending courage to those who shame
Possession to you is love
Share with others till you have no more
People would fail you time after time
And in return you’d make them smile
To parents you’re a wonder child
Without whom, their existence is not justified
To your siblings you’re a beautiful blessing
To your co-workers you’re a wonderful human being
So my sister, you are very rich
For what you give to all others
In times of need or times of rejoicing
After these years your love never once falters
All those who give, deserve to get
What life has got to offer best
So the best has yet to come my sister
But soon it’ll come to you hither
This New Year an ode to you
But forever, this, I believe is truth
To my dearest sister, to whom I reserve utmost love and admiration
